We have recently started organising Lizzie's subjects in these rainbow drawers. The top three drawers (phonics, writing and maths) are done each day and the other drawers are looped through during the week (with each drawer being visited once or twice each week).
I plan to change the contents of the drawers each term and there are several different activities in each drawer (a mini loop within a loop) so that each time we come to a lesson, what we are doing is new and exciting.
For Phonics we are using our own Phonics toolkit, currently working on level 2 sounds, level 1 activities and first 100 high frequency words. We also have several of the fiddlesticks phonics packs for variety: unicorn sound splat (with slime for unicorn poop), pumpkin phonics, Diwali lamp phonics and sentence building. We also have Little Red Riding Hood phonics workbook, On the Farm Reader and her current Dash Into Reading book.
We have Lizzie's name board (from our shop) and the alphabet writing board on the reverse. She is also working on a Star Wars handwriting tracing set I put together for her (with stickers when she completes each level). In this drawer there is also a blank whiteboard book for composition and a pack of story cards for verbal story telling.
For maths we have our own Fiddlesticks Toolkit (which is still a work in progress) for practical maths. Our trick or treat halloween game. Mental maths cards, wipe clean number cards. A search and find animal counting book and a wipe clean telling the time book. Her maths course books are the Star Wars maths skills (age 5-6) and Heinemann maths (year 1) - currently on book 2. There's also a pack of cards in this drawer for number and counting games.
At the moment we are only learning about capital letters for grammar. She is working through 'The Good and The Beautiful' Pre-K course. We have some play dough for making capital letters. A wipe clean board for correcting capital letters and adding full stops and a silly sentence building game.
Most of our science is done via nature study and hands on investigation, but we also enjoy some science books here. Wild times magazine from the RSPB, a nature sticker book (featuring different biomes), get our nature puzzles (seasonal), my first book about nature and how things grow (science sticker books) and 'Our Garden Birds' which we combine with learning their calls.
For Spanish we are using 'One Third Stories' - each month we are sent a new story book, flashcards with activity pack. We also keep all past flashcards in the drawer for recap. The colour activity is from our own shop and just to provide some variety. We also have the usborne Spanish flashcards to add extra vocabulary if we finish all the One Third Stories work before the next book arrives.
We are using 3 books this year to develop a sense of time these are, the pebble in my pocket, tick-tock and When I was Young. We also have past issues of the English Heritage magazine that we dip in and out of (especially if we are planning a visit to a historical site). For the month of November we've added two books about the first world war 'Where the Poppies Now Grow' and 'Poppy Field' along with some photos of family members who fought in the war.
We keep a junior atlas in here for looking up relevant places. The Barefoot Book of Earth Tales has information about different countries, stories from that country and a hands on activity. We also have a copy of the national geographic and our latest 'Letters From Afar' to add further places to learn about. Lizzie also loves the landmark lotto game. Map Drill consists on identifying, naming and placing the continents (using our own flashcards and world map) as well as drawing the maps for them in the wipe clean world book.
This drawer is kind of a catch all for other subjects. We have her succulent notebook that we write down what she learns about the care of her plants. A scissor skills activity (saddle the horses). Our current British Sign Language learning materials. A pack of famous paintings for art study and our musical notation flashcards.
For bible study were are reading through the Jesus Story Book Bible and she is colouring in her baby colouring bible at the same time. We also have a Devotional which we read from when we come to the RE drawer. We also have a copy of the Our Father that we are memorising. We are also looking at celebrations from other religions, at the moment reading through these two books about Diwali.
Life covers relationships, health and British Values. At the moment we are using the book 'wash, scrub and brush' to learn about keeping clean and the 'Let's Get Along' Series to learn about friendships. In this drawer Lizzie also has a memorisation sheet with her name, date of birth and address on it.
